f: focal length

: distance between the object and the lens

: distance between the image and the lens

Magnification 

Two-lens system is equal to the product of the magnifications of the individual lenses.

The lenses are thin compared to the other distances involved, which allows the Thin Lens Formula to be used
where f is focal length, d(object) is the distance between the object and the lens, and d(image) is the
distance between the image and the lens.
The magnification, M, of a two-lens system is equal to the product of the magnifications
of the individual lenses.

First. you are looking purpose. In this experiment, the purpose is to measure the apparent depth of acryl. 
And then, To determine the index of refraction of acryl from the apparent depth.

In this slide, I am going to explain the apparent depth.
For a transparent block, Light rays originating from the bottom surface refract at the top surface as the rays emerge from this inner point.
d is the apparent depth. t is actual thickness of the block.
The apparent depth is theoretically defined by d = t/n(t over n), where n is the index of refraction of the material.
